Coffee production is a water intensive process. UTZ Certified growers minimize their water and energy use by improving their installations, and recycling the water used. They protect the water sources and use sustainable energy sources where possible. For example, the coffee pulp is used as a fertilizer.
Trees and soil erosion
Coffee growers use native tree species as coffee shade trees if needed and protect endangered species. Deforestation is prohibited and often reforestation projects are installed. Because of this, soil erosion is reduced and prevented.
